This is Krishna's recipe, and one of my favorites :)..it tastes exactly like the Sundal Pattani masala that we get from "Thallu vandis"(road side carts)/beach side! Yumm-O!
Ingredients
Dry Green/White Peas (pattani) - 1.5 cups
Cauliflower - cut into medium size flowers, 1 cup
Potato (urulai kizhangu)- cut into medium size pieces, 1 cup
Capsicum/Green Pepper - chopped into medium size, 1/2 cup
Carrot - chopped into medium size, 1/2 cup
Onions (vengayam) -1 large onion julienned nicely
Tomato (thakkali)-1 tomato diced
Green Chili (pachai milagai)- 2 (about 2 inch) slit in the middle
Yogurt (thayir)- 1 tbsp
Salt (Uppu)- 1/2 teaspoon (add to taste)
Turmeric powder (manjal podi)- 1/4 teaspoon
Garlic/Garlic powder (poondu/poondu podi)- 1-2 pieces of fresh garlic cloves chopped finely or 1/2 spoon of garlic p0wder
Cumin seeds (Jeeragam) - 1 teaspoon
Curry powder (dhaniya, manjal podi, chaeppu milagai etc podi)- 1/2 teaspoon
Tava/Garam masala (masala podi)- 1/4 teaspoon
Chili powder (Kaara podi)- 1/4 teaspoon (or as needed)
Cardamom (Elakkai)/Cloves(Pattai) powder - 1/4 teaspoon
Soak peas in water overnight or at least for 3-4 hours. Drain the water once its done.
Take peas, cauliflower, potato, capsicum and carrot in a vessel, add 3-4 cups of water(vegetables should be fully covered by water), and add little turmeric and pressure cook. Save the water that you cooked the vegetables in.
Heat oil in a deep pan. When oil is heated, add Cumin Seeds, and when it starts to sizzle, add onions and green chillies and saute them. When the onions start to turn golden brown, add tomatoes and the garlic. Stir and heat on medium for about 5 minutes.
Add the curry powder, garam/tava masala, chilly powder and salt and mix it well. Add the yogurt and start mixing. The spices and the onion/tomatoes will form a nice thick gravy.
Now add all the cooked peas and vegetables. Add the Vegetable Broth (water used to cook the vegetables) little by little, until the consistency is that of a nice thick soup. Simmer with lid closed for 5 minutes. Remove the lid, and stir well a few times. Add more Vegetable Broth if needed. Add the Cardamom/Clove powder and chopped Cilantro, mix well and simmer with closed lid again for 5 minutes.
Serve with Chopped onions/Lemon slice on the side!
This also goes well as a side dish with Chapathis.
